Department of Applied Science

Department of Applied Science

The dynamic world of science and math is one of precision and possibility—from applying knowledge learned in a lab or a formula to exploring and solving a myriad of medical and biological problems. If you think science, aviation, or mathematics could benefit the career to which God is leading you, consider one of the programs offered by the Department of Applied Science. You also might want to add an Applied Science minor to another major to enhance your skills and make you more versatile and marketable.

“IN THE BEGINNING GOD CREATED THE HEAVEN AND THE EARTH.”

B.S. IN BIOCHEMISTRY

A B.S. IN BIOCHEMISTRY OPENS DOORS TO GRADUATE SCHOOL, MEDICAL SCHOOL, AND RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES.

If you’d love to explore the intricacies of molecular interactions, and serve others by advancing disease studies and cures, a degree in Biochemistry is for you. MBU’s Biochemistry program will provide you with knowledge and lab skills to understand the incredible world of chemical processes occurring constantly within living organisms.

MEET OUR DEPARTMENT CHAIR

Adelle Markle, ’23 // B.S. in Biochemistry, Mathematics minor

I am so thankful for my Maranatha college experience and the opportunity it has allowed me in graduate school. I accepted a position as a direct-admit cellular and molecular biology student in Dr. Jeff Hardin’s lab at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. My planned Ph.D. project investigates the effect of the fli-1 protein on actin regulation in the context of cell adhesion during embryonic development. My experience with bulk FRET enzyme assays in my senior capstone project fits the current direction of Dr. Hardin’s lab, particularly in the lab’s focus on the regulation of actin polymerization and its effects on cell-cell adhesion in developing embryos.

Joanna (Donovan) Sheeley, ’22 // B.S. in Biochemistry, Mathematics minor

I have recently accepted the position of Clinical Research Assistant III in the pediatric hematology/oncology/bone marrow transplant group, working for the Medical College of Wisconsin in conjunction with Children’s Wisconsin. I am eager to see how God continues to lead me and how He will use the great foundation I have received at MBU.

Mallory Willette // B.S. in Pre-Physical Therapy

I am 68 hours into my shadowing/internship experience at Clegg & Guest Physical Therapy, a privately-owned clinic. I’ve observed cases of hip replacements, knee replacements, reverse-shoulder replacements, rotator cuff injuries, back pain, and tardive dyskinesia. Each day I gain knowledge and experience–ranging from learning techniques to stretch and loosen a joint capsule to realizing the benefits of walking and standing and exploring strengthening exercises for the serratus anterior. My courses at MBU have prepared me greatly for what I see at the clinic. Courses like Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Kinesiology, and Medical Terminology have helped me understand the processes behind the treatment plans. My internship is amazing, and I am learning a lot!

Jonathan Andrews // B.S. in Mathematics, Church Music with Voice Proficiency minor

I will be a student trainee in Mathematics for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Engineer Research Development Center, Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory. My internship includes statistical analysis and a variety of research opportunities.

Hope Seest // B.S. in Exercise Science: Pre-Athletic Training

I will be teaching high school science at a Christian school in Minnesota this fall. My goal is to complete a Master of Athletic Training degree.

Caeley Griffith // B.S. in Biology, Cross-Cultural Studies minor, TESOL minor

I plan on teaching secondary science with Harvest Ministries in Guam. I’ll have the opportunity to teach science classes, including AP biology and physical science.

Callie Morrison // B.S. in Pre-Physical Therapy

I will be working with ATI Physical Therapy as a physical therapy aide and clinician extender, providing direct patient care and support. This will include safely setting up and adjusting exercise equipment, providing exercise instruction, monitoring exercise performance, helping provide prescribed home exercise programs, and assisting with delivery and setup of therapeutic modalities.

Jennifer Rueb // B.S. in Pre-Physical Therapy

In my new job as a physical therapy technician at Ivy Rehab Physical Therapy, I will be assisting the physical therapist and helping take patients through their therapeutic exercises. I will be bringing patients in from the waiting room and getting them started on their regimen. In addition, I will help with upkeep of the clinic by cleaning equipment and doing other tasks.

TORI MORRIS

Tori Morris (’19) graduated with a BS in Biochemistry. After graduating, she moved to Galveston Island, TX, to attend the University of Texas Medical Branch. Upon completion, she will receive a PhD in Human Pathophysiology and Transitional Medicine. While transitioning to grad school was challenging, she found that MBU had provided the scientific foundation and internship opportunities she needed. Tori appreciates the way professors challenged her in all areas of life—personal, professional, and spiritual.

TIM MEIER

Maranatha welcomed Timothy Meier to the Applied Science faculty in 2018. He has master’s degrees in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics and spent 25 years working as a microbiologist and senior biochemist for Eli Lilly and Company. He says, “After finishing a career in pharmaceutical research, I wanted to help the next generation of students interested in science prepare for their ministry. I believe sharing my experience as a researcher will complement the academic training they will receive while attending MBU and better prepare them for the challenges of a scientific career.”

JODI HERBERT

Dr. Jodi Herbert graduated from Maranatha in 2006 with a BA in Mathematics Education and joined Maranatha’s faculty in January 2015 after receiving both a master’s degree and a PhD in Mathematics from Kansas State University. She teaches a variety of undergraduate and graduate-level math courses and says, “Teaching gives me the opportunity to minister to students and study mathematics. Win-win!” Outside the classroom, she loves to read and be involved in music at her church, especially playing the piano.
