Battle of the Brains | 2.11.2022
On a chilly Friday morning, the societies converged. The gym bleachers were packed as students congregated by society to cheer on their champions in one of the most intense competitions of the school year: Battle of the Brains.
Each society selected twelve competitors, one to contend in each category: Disney and Pixar, Historical Figures, Student Life Handbook, Sports, Science, Slogans and Logos, Random, Bible Knowledge, Food, Music, Literature, and Geography and Travel. These students would battle brain-to-brain with the other societies’ champions, and only one society would exit the victor.
The students were encouraged to wear society gear in support of their champions and each society went all out. The Arctic Wolves chose a black-out theme. Each of their members entered the gym decked in black from head to toe. The Diamondbacks passed maracas out to each of their members and the rattle of the snake echoed through the gym for the entire competition. The Pumas and the Titans pulled out the face paint and the Conquerors and the Golden Eagles held a cheer-off in the minutes before the battle began.
When the time came, OSA Director Mr. Luke DeWald entered the stage in true game-show-host fashion, complete with a black suit and bright pink tie. Before expounding on the rules and gameplay, he paused for a moment and held a word of prayer for Ben Yenger, an MBU student who had just entered kidney transplant surgery as Battle of the Brains was commencing.
After lifting Ben up to the Lord, Mr. DeWald explained the rules, and the battle began. As each category appeared on the screen, the selected champions lined up at the front of the room with a small remote control in hand. Each category consisted of ten questions, and the students pointed their remote controls to the IT booth and pressed the button that corresponded with the answer they wanted to select. When the correct answer was given, the next question popped up, and at the end of the category, the societies’ rankings were listed. Then the next group stepped up.
The students in the bleachers were encouraged to help their champions, and the room roared to life with each new question as cheers and opinions resounded. However, only one society could win, and at the end of the battle, the Conquerors, fittingly, conquered.
