Advance to College from Your High School
These days, there’s a big push for dual-enrollment and Advanced Placement courses once students reach high school. If you are a high school student, perhaps you are taking dual-credit classes. Maybe you are a parent or administrator desiring to help your students “get ahead” in their college careers. Some of you are probably taking the dual-enrollment route through another university while others have gone with AP classes.
Both are fantastic tracks and help boost the academic level at your school. But there could be a better option for your school.
Better? Yes. Better.
Often times, dual-credit options can get expensive and annoying. Students may have to leave their school campus to go to the local community college where they learn from new teachers. As an administrator, you want to ensure the academic excellence for your students, but you also wish your students could take these classes from your own teachers.
MBU wants to equip Christian schools around the nation with a higher level education option, but without the hoops, testing, and off-site classes. To meet this need, MBU has crafted the Advance To College Program designed to provide affordable college-credit taught by your own Christian School faculty.
What is Advance to College?
So, how does it work?
Advance To College equips your Christian school’s existing teachers to teach MBU’s college courses for college credit. That’s right, an MBU course taught by your own school’s faculty. Your teachers simply teach the course using the same syllabus taught on the MBU campus. And students earn high school and college credit at the same time.
For example, perhaps some students are interested in taking a U.S. History class through a local community college. They would either have to make time for online classes at home or go to the community college campus every other day for class. With Advance to College, your current history teacher could simply teach the class content that is taught on the MBU campus, and when the students finish the course at the end of the year, they will have college credit.
Wait, where’s the AP exam?
That’s one of the best parts. There are no standardized exams that you don’t see until the summer. Students simply take the class exam written by their own teacher. And if they pass the class, they get college credit.
The Possibilities
From a student’s perspective, this program is so beneficial because you can get college credit without ever leaving your normal school routine.
From a parent’s and administrator’s perspective, this program provides three big things.
- An affordable dual-credit option that enhances your academic offerings — $99 a course (not credit).
- Students are able to experience the rigor of a college course while in a supportive environment.
- Classes are taught by teachers operating with the Biblical worldview that is the power of your school in the first place.
What if there are students in the class who aren’t going to MBU?
This program can help any students, not just those planning to attend Maranatha. All the credits are accredited and therefore transferable to any other college. Maranatha is regionally accredited which means the credits can follow students regardless of where they choose to further their education.
Your next step: Advance to College
So you’re probably wondering what you have to do to qualify and sign up for this program. Honestly, it’s super easy. The only requirement is that teachers must have a Master’s degree in the subject(s) they wish to teach OR they must have a Master’s degree and 18 graduate credits in the subject(s) they wish to teach.
What this means is that you don’t have to implement the program school-wide. If you only have one teacher that qualifies, he or she can begin teaching college classes immediately. Then, as other teachers finish working on their Master’s, then they can hop right into the program.
